Community Service Day @ Christmas Toy Shop (Dec. 5, 2009)

A dozen players from the Shorecrest Preparatory School's Gold Girls Soccer team (plus one of the girl's friends and two parents) gave up their Saturday afternoon on December 5, 2009, to welcome clients to the non-profit Christmas Toy Shop (550 16th Street North, St. Petersburg, Fl, 33705 (727) 898-3962 ToyShopElf@Juno.com) and help them select toys for their children.

It was a great experience for all to get in the holiday spirit!

(Thanks to Bailee's mom, Nikki, for the great photos!)

Keswick Christian 2, Shorecrest MD Girls Gold 0

In some ways, the MD Girls Gold team's second soccer game of the season was the inverse of its first. During game one, the goalie Dulci B. never touched the ball; in game two, Keswick's keeper never touched the ball as Gold had no shots on goal.

The good news is that Gold kept the game close--down just 1-0 at the half. But the Keswick defense frustrated Shorecrest throughout the entire contest. Meanwhile, at our end of the field, Dulci B. finally got her hands on the ball, stopping 11 of 12 shots in the first half and 20 of 21 in the second half--31 of 33 in all. It was an outstanding performance by the rookie.

It could have been much worse, but for the speed of sweeper Ana Gabriela R. and stopper Katerina A.--they were everywhere at once, or so it seemed--as well as some booming kicks by Nadine S. and the tenacity of Katie J., who ran circles around a forward twice her size.

Gold's record is now 2-1. Next game: Monday, December 7 @ Sarasota Christian.

In case you missed it...

Congratulations to Nadine and Cennedi, who were invited to play in the Green team's Nov. 17 home game against St. Stephen's. The girls represented us well, contributing to a 5-0 rout of one of Shorecrest's traditional rivals.

Team Parents, Photos, Community Service Update!

Parents and Players,

Don't forget, we have a HOME game on Monday, Nov. 23 @ 4 p.m. Girls should be on the field no later than 3:30 p.m. (Georgia and Amanda, please come earlier so I can get you uniforms!)

I expect to see our full team together for the first time on Monday as no one has indicated they won't be there, so this should be fun! Hope we'll see a lot of parents and friends cheering on the girls, too!

A few other notes:

TEAM PARENTS: Nadine's mom and Cennedi's mom have kindly volunteered to be team parents. When they ask you to help with a concession stand shift or shift selling tickets at our games, etc., please do so. Thanks to them and thanks to all of you!

TEAM PHOTOS: Please mark Thursday, Dec. 3, 3:15 p.m., on your calendars as a day the girls cannot miss: It's Photo Day! A photographer will meet us on the field for team and individual pictures! The team photo is used in the yearbook and you'll have an opportunity to purchase individual photos later. No obligation.

TEAM WEBSITE: If you haven't surfed us yet, please do: http://shorecrestmdgirlssoccergold.blogspot.com/ . In addition to game reports and schedule updates, I try to post game photos, soccer-related videos and other items of interest. It's also a convenient place to find schedules for all Shorecrest soccer teams as well as the women's teams at USF, Eckerd and the Women's Professional Soccer league.

You can subscribe to the site and receive updates via email the minute they're published. Please encourage the girls to subscribe so they get the latest information directly!

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Please mark Saturday, Dec. 5, noon-3 p.m., on your calendars. That's the day the Gold team will participate in a community service activity serving as "elves/helpers" at the Christmas Toy Shop (550 - 16th Street N.) for the annual toy distribution to underprivileged children in St. Pete. Visit christmastoyshop.org for more information. Community service is now a required part of the athletic program at Shorecrest so I expect we'll have a strong, enthusiastic turnout!

Go Chargers!

Gold beats Seffner Christian, 6-1!

Six goals, scored by six different girls, led to the Shorecrest MD Girls Gold Soccer team winning its first competitive game of the season in a 6-1 victory over Seffner Christian at home on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 (following a forfeit).

Goals were scored by Rachel A. (on a pass from Annie G.), Annie G (on a pass from Elle S.), Alex P. (on a header assist from Rachel A.), Nadine S. (on a penalty kick), Elle S. (on a pass from Annie G.) and Cennedi M. (on assists from Elle S. and Nadine S.) In total, the Chargers took 25 shots on goal in the game.

The Gold defense was extraordinary from start to finish, allowing just one shot on goal the entire game. Kudos to defenders Nadine S., Ana Gabriela R., Cennedi M., and Katerina A. Dulci B., making her debut as goalie, thanked her teammates afterward for leaving her bored!

Katie J. played in virtually every position on the field (except keeper) and was a factor in almost every play. The complete team effort included contributions from Caitlin B., Sionna M., Madison O., Merdeith L., and Bailee M.

Our record: 2-0.

That's a W!

When our opponent (St. Pete Christian) failed to show on Tuesday, the referee entered it as an official forfeit. In other words, that's a win for the Shorecrest Middle Division Girls Gold Soccer team!

We'd rather play, but a W is a W!

Our record: 1-0.

MD Soccer Gold Girls Welcome Coach John Hutton!

Coach Hutton

I'm excited to announce that Coach John Hutton--who last year led the Shorecrest MD Girls Green Soccer team to its first undefeated season--will be working with me this fall coaching the Gold team! Coach Hutton also coached the MD Girls Softball team for the last two seasons, including last spring's almost perfect season. Welcome aboard, Coach! --Coach Bob Andelman
