Shorecrest Prep MD Girls Gold Soccer volunteers at Christmas Toy Shop in St. Petersburg! (PHOTOS)

While the Christmas Toy Shop wasn't as busy as we all would have liked, I think the 10 girls who made it to volunteer on Saturday, December 7, 2013 -- our best team turnout in four years! -- certainly got a taste of what it felt like to be good citizens and to help families in our community.

And this year, we got a bonus: the picture of the team -- including assistant coach Kelsey Pomerleau and this old man -- landed on Monday's front page of TampaBay.com, a.k.a., the digital version of the Tampa Bay Times. Thank you to Keaton's dad, Rob Pope, who took the group shot, and to Shorecrest's own Su Stevens for encouraging us to post a photo on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #TampaBay Inspires, which apparently caught the newspaper's attention.

Donations are always welcome in the form of money, in-kind services, time or toys. All donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to The Christmas Toy Shop Project, Inc. The Toy Shop accepts new and gently used toy donations at door # 6, Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please no knives or guns.

You may also donate using Pay Pal.

Volunteers are always welcome during the hours Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to sort, wash, repair, paint and pack toys. This includes individuals, corporations, churches, community service clubs, students who need community service hours to fulfill Bright Futures requirements and anyone else who is interested.

Gold Game Results: Thursday, Nov. 14. Chargers 1: Keswick 5

Pressure. Diligence. Focus. These are the best words to describe the opening night of the Shorecrest MD Girls Gold Soccer fall season at Keswick Christian.

Putting its emphasis on defense at the start of the game, the Chargers primary defenders -- Alex H., Jacqui B., Nikki L. and Camille P-F. -- limited a hard-charging opponent to six shots on goal in the first half and half as many in the second.

When the Shorecrest offense attacked in the second half, Anna M. took the team's first shot on goal of the evening and assisted Lindsey L. on the team's first point of the season. The offense, including Marielle S., Reilly K., Kyra B. and Anna P., plus midfielders Aliyah S., Julia G., and the absolutely sparkling Haley T. and Karli M., gave the visiting team and a large contingent of friends and family much to cheer about in the second half.

This game marked the Shorecrest debut of two new keepers with a great deal of promise, Keaton P. and Elizabeth S.

Final score, Keswick 5, Chargers 1.

Next game is Tuesday, November 19 @ 4 p.m. HOME vs. Tampa Prep on the PE/Intramural Field.

On legs she can't feel, Eckerd soccer player looks for new goal (Tampa Bay Times)

ST. PETERSBURG — The first time she learned to walk, she kicked grapefruits across the kitchen floor, so there was never a time that Erin Davis didn't play soccer. She played with the neighborhood kids and she played with the boys, the ones four years her senior, and by the time Erin was 13, colleges were filling her mailbox, wondering if she'd come play with them too.

Soon she'd join the most elite pool of players in the country, on the United States youth national team. She'd play on five teams at once, and train at the Bradenton athletic academy that gave Eli Manning to football and Ian Desmond to baseball. The Olympics committee would send letters to her high school. Erin can't come to school today because ...

Suddenly there was pain. Pain in her legs when she ran and kicked the ball, pain in her head from the bad things that had happened, the things she told herself weren't real.

To live a life without the pain, Erin Davis had surgery to kill the nerve in her left leg; nerve damage took care of the right. Today, 26 and still playing, she can't feel anything beneath her knees: not the ankles she covers with shin guards, not the cleats she laces up over her feet. She can't feel the ground she is running on. She can't feel the ball she is kicking past goalies.

She returned to the field for the first time in six years this fall as a mid-fielder for Eckerd College's Division II team.

Soccer could help Davis find closure from the only dream she's ever had. But it's hard to find a new dream, when you don't let go of the old one.

Awards time for 2011-12 Shorecrest MD Girls Soccer!

The Green and Gold Middle Division Soccer Teams celebrated the end of their season this Wednesday. As the girls enjoyed ice cream sundaes, they listened in as each player received a certificate of excellence. Afterwards, both teams passed out their Coach's Awards.

Wendy D. was the recipient for the Green Team and Madison H. for the Gold Team. These awards were followed by the awards voted on by the players themselves.

The Most Improved Award went to Naomi M. for the Green Team and Carly T. for the Gold Team.

Last, but certainly not least, the Most Valuable Player Award went to Olivia R. for the Green Team and Harsheen M. for the Gold Team.

Coaches Hutton and Conroy (Green) and Andelman and Dougherty want to thank all the parents for supporting the teams and especially the team parents, Sandy Epstein (Green) and Amy Friedman (Gold) for all their hard work, too!

All in all, it was a fantastic season!

Dec. 13 Game Result: Chargers 3: Indian Rocks Christian 3

The Girls Middle Division Soccer Green Team battled to a 3 - 3 tie with Indian Rocks Christian on Haskell Field on Tuesday, December 13. The Green Team opened the scoring with a beautiful shot from Kendall P. Other scorers were Olivia R. assisted by Nicole L. and Nicole L. unassisted. Further offensive support was given by Chayton H., Camille P., and Wendy D. Defensively, the Chargers were led by Mariah V. making her first ever start in goal, Olivia D., Caya S., Peninah B., Laura H., Kim B., and Naomi M. Alli and Sam E. continued their fine field play, and assistance was also given to the squad from Multi O. and Harsheen M.

The Green Team has an overall record of 2-2-1 going into the holiday break. Play continues at home on January 4 against Pinellas Prep with a 4 pm game.

Dec. 8 Game Result: Shorecrest 4, Seffner Christian 3

Finally! Two enormous cheers erupted -- on the field and on the bench -- as the Chargers MD Girls Gold team had its first shot on goal and its first goal scored for Shorecrest in a road game at Seffner Christian on Thursday, Dec. 8. Breck T. had Gold's first shot on goal (three games into the season) and minutes later, Ashley B. became the squad's first player to find the net. Olivia R. (shots) and Camille P. (assists) -- on loan from the Green squad -- combined on two additional scores, one in each half. Caya S. (two), Kim B. and Olivia D. also had shots on goal in the game. Early into the second half, Breck T. also put a ball in the net, her point being the difference maker in an electrifying 4-3 final score.

Carly T., Hannah L., Julia G., Jessie J., Karli M. and Sarah F. worked extremely hard as strikers and midfielders and continually to demonstrate marked improvement in their positions.

In goal, Olivia D. stopped five of six shots with Jessie J. going one for three.

The defense was once more electrifying in the game with kudos to Harsheen M., Laura H., Wendy D., Elizabeth H., Karli M. and Madison H. for repeatedly frustrating the Seffner Christian offense and dramatically reducing the number of shots against Shorecrest compared with its game two days early vs. Sarasota Christian.

The Gold team's record is now 2-2.

December 2, 2011: Shorecrest 7, Keswick Christian 0

The Shorecrest Middle Division Girls Gold soccer team came out swinging at Keswick Christian on Friday, Dec. 2, scoring a big victory, 7-0. The game was unusual as it was actually played by a hybrid squad, with middle school players from Gold, Green and even JV filling in for 6th graders away on the Pathfinders trip.

Despite the high score, it was actually the Chargers defense that shone brightest in this game, allowing just three shots on goal in the entire game, two handled by Olivia D., one by Sophie W., making her debut in the position. That earned a tip o' the hat to Multy O., Madison H., Laura H., Peninah B. and Sage F.

On the offensive side of the game, a slow first 15 minutes led to an explosion the rest of the way, with 27 shots on goal. Holly M. and Nicole M. led the team with two goals each, followed by single scores by Sophie W., Olivia R. and Camille P. Seven girls earned assists, including two each for Kendall P. and Olivia R. and single credits for Olivia D., Peninah B, and Camille P.

The victory improved the combined MD Girls record to 2-3.

Shorecrest MD Green Girls Soccer Road Trip! (Nov. 18, 2011)

Nov. 18, 2011: Shorecrest Green 1, St. Stephens 0

The Girls Middle Division Green Team opened their 2011-12 season with a thrilling victory over St. Stephens School of Bradenton winning by a score of 1 - 0.

The entire team contributed to the victory. Nicole Levine scored the game's only goal assisted by Caya Sabota. Kendall Pope and Holly Morris had a combined total of six shots on goal, while Camille Pillot, Laura Heagy, Madison Holt, and Kim Bastas helped control mid field play. Breck Tanner showed great poise assisting both at midfield and up front.

The defense was anchored by keeper Olivia Dannemiller who had seven saves while recording the shutout. Defenders Multy Oliver, Mariah Vesely, Harsheen Marwah, and Chayton Hemsey shut down the potent St. Stephens attack.

Play continues on November 29th as the Green Machine travels to Indian Rocks Christian.
